DePompeo leads Sayville to win

October 6, 2007

Determined not to let Sayville slip into a losing streak, Jasmine DePompeo took matters into her own hands. The junior forward scored two goals as visiting Sayville defeated Huntington, 3-0, Friday in a Suffolk League V girls soccer game.

DePompeo broke into the box while being chased by defenders and scored six minutes into the first half. She added her second goal in the 69th minute, following a scramble on a free kick, to give Sayville a 3-0 lead.

"We were trying to bounce back from a loss," DePompeo said. "We really tried to pump ourselves up for this game. I try to be aggressive all the time. It's my job to score."

Lauren Fornkwicz sandwiched a goal between DePompeo's team-leading 10th and 11th. She scored on a direct kick from 30 yards in the 31st minute to give the Golden Flashes (5-1, 2-1) a two-goal lead heading into the half.

"When we secured the second goal, it gave us a little cushion," Sayville coach John Schroeder said. "The other team had a bunch of quality players, but we were able to shut them down. My sweeper, Hanah Lee, didn't let anything get by. They didn't have the time to make good shots. They were being rushed all game."

Coach John Walsh intended on getting the ball to his star players, Leslie O'Brien, a two-time All-County selection, and Casey Scully for Huntington (3-5-1, 3-2-1). But Sayville's Lee and Co. made it difficult for those players to get on track.

"We came out flat and they came out flying," Walsh said. "They scored quickly and that put us behind the eight ball and forced us to change our game plan. That showed us that we had to play defense. We wanted to get Leslie the ball, but she had to drop back and help out."

Sayville goalkeeper Heather Bonamico made nine saves to earn her fifth shutout of the season.
